Anyone anticipating Olivier Dahan’s much-publicised and vaunted Grace of Monaco, quiver your butts now as a full theatrical trailer has swept in courtesy of Warner Bros. UK, where Nicole Kidman gets to play Princess Grace Kelly and wear fabulous, iconic frocks and dazzling jewellery that could bankrupt a third-world country. It looks gorgeously grand, yes – but let’s not get too excited just yet. Royalties in movies aren’t exactly having a whale of time right now. Only a few months ago, Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Diana – another movie about a princess with a tumultuous marriage – was released to braying critics and transformed a potential Oscar-bait to a qualified catastrophe. Poor Naomi Watts had to suffer the bile after a histrionic, overwrought performance.
Now, it’s Kidman’s turn to prove she can change the game. As far as I’m concerned, Kidman’s a fucking legend and perhaps there’s no other actress working right now who’s a perfect fit for a role as iconic as Grace Kelly. Olivier Dahan also earns my respect for two things: 1) for giving us the superb Edith Piaf biopic La vie en Rose , and 2) for refusing Harvey Weinstein butchering his final cut of Grace. Soon it’ll open the 67th Cannes Film Festival this May, and we’ll if see the most prestigious and glamorous film festival in the world will be enthralled.
