For fans of the French-Canadian talent extraordinaire Xavier Dolan (me, included), it’s a good week for us. His latest creative output, the sex-change drama Lawrence Anyways, will be premiering in Cannes Film Festival this May and the trailer has just been released for us to devour. It’s in French, so unless you wear a beret, a Breton shirt, eats baguette and speaks with a pouting mouth, you’ll understand what these Gauls are talking about. If you don’t, just bask in the emotionally pulsating film trailer about a man who decides to be a woman when he reaches his 30th, soundtrack to perfection by Moderat’s A New Error.
This one looks like an emotional rollercoaster, thematically mature, almost Almodovarian, yet stylistically very much Dolan. Anyone who has seen his previous little opuses I Killed My Mother and the rather brilliant Les Amour Imaginaire (or its lazy English translation Heartbeats) know what to expect of Dolan – a cross between a young Jean-Luc Godard and Wong Kar Wai. And for those who despise Dolan, why don’t you just go jump off a cliff or something and end your miserable, artless life before it spreads.
For the Frenchies.
And for those who doesn’t know any other language other than English.
Just look at this shot – Exhibit A. It’s pure ART!
